Mr. Smith owned a portion of the MD & HL Smith Manufacturing Company, which was later passed down to Mrs. Longley. Mr. Smith was always an avid golfer and began using crutches to play after he was diagnosed with arthritis. He was also a founding member of the Dalton Golf and Country Club, a Civitan, and involved in other local organizations.
