This is a living history interview with Coach Jake Rudolph, class of 1952, conducted by Marilyn Somers on February 20, 2001 in his home in Memphis, Tennessee. The subject of this interview is his life and experiences at Georgia Tech. Mr. Rudolph grew up in Clarkesville, Tennessee and enjoyed sports throughout his childhood. He always planned to go to college and wanted to attend Vanderbilt, but decided to go to Georgia Tech after watching a game against Tennessee. After high school, Mr. Rudolph attended Darlington Prep School for a year and tried out for Tech’s football team. His nose was broken during tryouts, but he still made the team. Mr. Rudolph recalls student life at Georgia Tech and his experiences playing under Coach Bobby Dodd. After graduating from Tech, Mr. Rudolph married and went into the Air Force where he played on their football team for two years. When he returned to the United States, he worked for a bearings company before accepting a position to coach at Darlington. When Memphis University School opened, Mr. Rudolph became their football coach until his retirement. He has 3 sons and 9 grandchildren.
