Scope and Content

From the Collection:

This collection contains many images, formats include: black & white and color photographs, card photographs, negatives, postcards, reprints of historical images, and photocopies. These visual materials relate to Randolph Whitfield and his family. Whitfield made a hobby of researching his genealogy, so many of the portraits are of his ancestors on both his mother's and father's sides, the Randolphs and the Whitfields, respectively. Both of these families were very powerful and wealthy landowners in the Southeastern United States for many years, and they owned magnificent plantation homes, mostly in North Carolina and Florida, that have since been turned into historical sites. Whitfield documented many of these homes and photographs of them are also included in this collection. There are also photographs of Randolph and Shirley's children, grandchildren, and family events. Additionally, there are scrapbooks documenting the Whitfields' life through the 1950s.
