John Culver was born on November 10, 1925 in Dothan, Alabama. In 1950, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Speech from Northwestern University, followed by his Master of Arts degree from DePauw University in 1952.
After serving in the United States Navy (1943-1946), Culver worked for several radio and television stations, such as WDIG in Dothan and WFLN in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Culver's career at Georgia Tech started in 1971, as the Director of Campus Affairs. He retired from Georgia Tech in 1986.
