Abstract

Val Lewton (Vladimir Ivan Leventon) was a screenwriter and producer for RKO Studios in the 1940s. The collection contains two of Lewton's own screenplay drafts: the Chamber of Horrors: A Tale of Bedlam and The Body Snatcher.

Biography of Val Lewton

Val Lewton (Vladimir Ivan Leventon) was born in 1904 in Yalta, Russia and came to the United States with his mother at seven years old. He started working in the film industry in the early 1930s as an editorial assistant to producer David Selznick. In the early 1940s, he was put in charge of RKO's low budget horror films. He made several successful movies, such as Cat People (1942), the Ghost Hip (1943) and Curse of the Cat People (1944). He died in 1951.
