Begun in 1952, The Best from Fantasy and Science Fiction acted as an anthology of the best work from The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, with the work being selected by the current editor and publisher of the magazine. The anthology was usually published yearly, containing the best from the prior year, but occasionally an edition would be published to celebrate some large anniversary for the magazine.
