Georgia Tech Archives and Special Collections holds issues of the magazine published between 1952 and 1978. It may not be a complete run of the publication.
Begun in 1952, Fantastic was a science fiction publication under Ziff-Davis Publishing Co. Like many longer-running science fiction periodicals, Fantastic underwent several name changes. From '52 to '59 was Fantastic, '59 to '60 was Fantastic Science Fiction Stories, '60 was Fantastic, Stories of Imagination, '61 to '65 was Fantastic Stories of Imagination (no comma), '65 to '71 was Fantastic, '71 to '79 was Fantastic Stories, and finally '79 to '80 was Fantastic Science Fiction. Because the collection ranges from '52 to '78, the reader will see this name change. In 1965, Fantastic also changed publishers to Ultimate Publishing Co. As a magazine, it started out with a very good reputation that slowly decaded over time. As it changed editors and publishers, people worked diligently to repair its reputation, which accounts for the longevity of its run. However, science fiction magazine were on the decline in later years, and this contributed to the closing of the publication in 1980.
