Somers was born on March 1, 1937 in Deaborn Heights, Michigan. She grew up in the Detroit area and graduated from Saint Alphonsus High School in 1955. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oakland University in 1983 and Master's Degree in Communication from Georgia State University in 1992.
She moved to Atlanta in 1985 and worked for the Atlanta Women's Chamber of Commerce as their executive director. She started her career at Georgia Tech as the Alumni Association director of communications and public relations in 1989. While there, she founded the Living History Program in 1994 and served as its director for 26 years. She conducted over 1,000 oral histories of alumni, retired faculty, and staff interviews. Some of the interviews include past presidents, astronauts, football players, and President Jimmy Carter. In 2008, Marilyn received the distinguished honor of being named an honorary alumna of Georgia Tech.
She passed away on January 3, 2024.
