Galileo was a science and science fiction magazine published out of Boston, Massachusetts. The name Galileo, as former editor Vince McCaffrey has said, came from the “undying quest for knowledge and sense of wonder that motivates all scientists” (Source: The History of the Science Fiction Magazine, Vol. 3). The magazine spanned from September 1976 to January 1980. Notable contributors to Galileo include Harland Ellison, Larry Niven, Frank Herbert, and Arthur C. Clarke.

Galileo was a science and science fiction magazine published out of Boston, Massachusetts. The magazine was started by Vince McCaffrey, the owner of a small yet popular bookstore in Boston that boasted a dedicated fanbase. The name Galileo, as McCaffrey has said, came from the “undying quest for knowledge and sense of wonder that motivates all scientists” (Source: The History of the Science Fiction Magazine, Vol. 3). Galileo was published in Quarto format and side stapled, starting as a quarterly but changing to a bimonthly schedule upon the publication of its 6th issue. The magazine’s first issue was released in September 1976 and its last, no. 16, in January 1980. No. 17 had been planned, but the magazine dissolved before its publication; only the covers were printed. Notable contributors to Galileo include Harland Ellison, Larry Niven, Frank Herbert, and Arthur C. Clarke.
