This collection consists of papers, architectural documents, and photographs concerning H. Griffith Edwards’ personal and professional life. It contains correspondence, written works by Edwards, as well as other documents concerning architectural projects. Also present are materials documenting projects from Edwards’ father’s architecture firm, Edwards and Sayward. The creation dates of materials in this collection range from 1934 to 2020. Undated materials have been given approximate dates based on Edwards’ career as an architect and partnership with John Portman.
H. Griffith Edwards (1907-1972) was born in Columbia, S.C. and attended the Georgia Institute of Technology where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1930. He was a partner in the firm of Edwards and Goodwyne from 1940 to 1941 and principal of H. Griffith Edwards, Architects, from 1941 until 1956 when he joined the firm of Edwards and Portman. Edwards was also a professor at Georgia Tech in the School of Architecture from 1946 to 1969. During his time working with John Portman, their firm worked on notable projects such as the Peachtree Center Complex, Dana Fine Arts Building at Agnes Scott College, and the Hyatt Regency Atlanta (formerly Regency Hyatt House).

Materials are stored off-site. Requests for access must be submitted at least 2 business days in advance.

If available, two copies were retained. Publications such as books and magazines that are easily found elsewhere were not kept. Newspaper clippings that provide context to materials were photocopied.
