Scope and Contents

The Third United States Army publication includes a single item, Crossing of the Rhine River by Third U. S. Army, a previously confidential report published by the United States government. The report contains a text narrative describing the crossing, photographs, and a map detailing crossing operations. The Third Army's connection to Georgia Tech is unknown, although it may be assumed that some alumni were members of the Third Army.

History of the Third United States Army

From its inception, Third Army has played a major role in America's military history. It was formed on November 7, 1918 at Chaumont, France, when the General Headquarters of the American Expeditionary Forces issued General Order 198 organizing the Third Army and announcing its headquarters staff. The Army was under the command of Lieutenant General George S. Patton, Jr. during World War II. The Third Army participated in eight major operations as it drove into and through France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Austria. Third Army contributed immeasurably to the defeat of Nazi Germany.

Third Army's most recent reactivation was on December 1, 1982 at Fort McPherson, Georgia.
