During the years of President Van Leer's leadership of Georgia Tech, education at the graduate level was expanded. The first doctoral degree in chemical engineering was awarded to William L. By 2002, doctorates in twenty-eight fields were offered by Georgia Tech. In that year, 257 doctoral degrees were awarded.
