Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a single volume, a handwritten directory of Georgia Tech students. Each entry in the volume includes the student's last name, first and middle initials, class, city address, name and address of parent or guardian, and the county. A column labelled "Sec." includes notations, possibly by the Secretary of the Faculty or the Registrar, indicating the student's major and/or withdrawal date.

One person, possibly the Registrar or an assistant, entered all the names for each year. The handwriting differs from year to year.

Administrative History of the Office of the Registrar

The Office of the Registrar at the Georgia Institute of Technology is responsible for maintaining the official academic record of students at the institution.

T. P. (Thomas Pettus) Branch, Professor of Civil Engineering and Adjunct Professor of Mathematics, served as Secretary of the Faculty and Registrar beginning soon after his arrival at Tech in 1895. He was succeeded in about 1916 by H. H. (Hugh Harris) Caldwell, who held the position of Registrar for twenty-seven years. After serving as Acting Registrar during Caldwell's final illness (Caldwell died in 1943), Lloyd W. Chapin took over as Registrar in March 1942. In 1948, William Lawson Carmichael succeeded Chapin, and Chapin went on to become Dean of Faculties at Tech. Carmichael, who had been a professor in the textile school, served as Registrar for twenty years. Frank E. Roper, Jr. became Registrar on Carmichael's retirement in July 1968. Roper remained in that position for thirty-two years, until his retirement in 2000, when Jo McIver succeeded him. Reta Pikowsky took over the position in 2005, and continues as Registrar in June 2009.
