Scope and Contents

This is a living history interview with Dr. Henry Bourne conducted by Marilyn Somers on January 25th, 2001. Dr. Bourne was born in Tarboro, North Carolina in 1921. He decided early in his life that he wanted to be an engineer, and set his sights on getting the best education he thought he could get—MIT. He attended MIT (with one interruption because of the war), and got both a Masters and a PhD there. He started off teaching at USC, then became Chairman of the Electrical Engineering department at Rice. He then left Rice and worked for the National Science Foundation as the head of their Electrical Engineering section before coming to Tech. At Tech he was the Vice President of Academic Affairs and later he was acting President. He got the chance to meet many people at Tech, faculty and students alike, and thoroughly enjoyed his time there. He retired in 1992.
