This is a Living History interview with Mr. Talmage L. Dryman, conducted by Marilyn Somers on July 28, 1995 at Mr. Dryman’s home in Atlanta, Georgia. The subject of this interview is about his life and experiences at Georgia Tech.
Mr. Dryman was born in Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Dryman had a good boyhood, and went to Boys’ High School. When he arrived at Georgia Tech, he pledged Chi Phi. He graduated in 1945 instead of ’46 to go into the navy earlier. He served on the USS Tennessee. His experiences in the navy were mainly in the South Pacific, including witnessing the surrender of Southern Japan.
Mr. Dryman’s first memory of Tech was that of a Tech versus University of Florida football game. As a student, he participated in the Freshman Cake Race. He remembers the T-Dances and the band that were there. He was in the Skull and Key Club as well as the Bulldog Club. He excelled in literature but had problems with mechanical drawing. He also remembers the story of his father-in-law, Frank M. Spratlin, who was responsible for buying much of the current extensions of Tech's campus.
Mr. Dryman worked for Woolworth Company and was superintendent for half of the country. He has served as the Alumni Association president. He has two sons. Overall, Mr. Dryman feels that he has used everything he learned and Tech and that it was a grand experience.
