This is the narrative of the Oral History Interview with David Daniel Long, Jr., conducted by Marilyn Somers on August 27, 1997 at Mr. Long’s home in Atlanta. Mr. Long was born in York, PA. He and his mother went back to Georgia to join his father after his birth. When Mr. Long was 4 or 5, his family moved to Atlanta, where Mr. Long attended grade school and high school. As a child, Mr. Long attended Tech football games with his neighbors. After missing out on a scholarship to Harvard, Mr. Long decided to attend Tech for college. His first semester at Tech included a meeting with Dean Skiles, good grades, a bid from Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and a trip across the Mississippi for Phi Eta Sigma. Mr. Long was a "joiner" while at Tech, and he tells of his social life, traditions, George P. Burdell, UGA, the Bulldog Club, the Scientia Club, Tech Publications, and some of his favorite professors. After graduation, Mr. Long worked for Atlantic Steel for a short while, and was called to active duty in the Navy. Mr. Long served on 5 ships during WWII and saw action in both the Atlantic and the Pacific. After the war, Mr. Long returned to the U.S. to claim a bridesmaid he kept, and moved back to Georgia. He spend his career first with Atlantic Steel, and then with Alco Manufacturing Company, from where he retired as CEO. He has spent his retired years traveling the world. Mr. Long closed his interview by talking about his daughter, son, and grandchildren, as well as his new wife.
