This is an Oral History Interview with Homan Rees Phenix, class of 1955, conducted by Marilyn Somers on July 22, 1999 at his home on Lake Burton in Clayton, Georgia. The subject of the interview is student life at Georgia Tech. Mr. Phenix was born in Texas in 1933 and moved to Miami, Florida when he was six years old. His father was a school principal and his mother was a teacher. Mr. Phenix was a good student and was involved in high school sports. Mr. Phenix was recruited by Bobby Dodd and came to Tech on a football scholarship. Mr. Phenix felt well prepared for Tech and was academically successful until his third quarter when he really had to start studying. Mr. Phenix got to play in the 1953 Sugar Bowl and the 1955 Cotton Bowl. He has many stories about the football program and life as an athlete at Tech. Mr. Phenix was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and was in ROTC for all four years. He started pilot training in the Air Force after graduation and was in the military for three years. He was stationed in Tennessee and Japan. He moved back to Atlanta and was hired as a pilot for Delta Airlines. Mr. Phenix met his wife, Frances, in Atlanta and they have three children. Since his retirement from Delta in 1993, Mr. and Mrs. Phenix live on Lake Burton.
