The following is an Living History Interview with D. Raymond Riddle, Georgia Tech class of 1955, conducted by Marilyn Somers at his office in Atlanta, Georgia on August 30, 1995. The subject of this interview is student life at Georgia Tech. Mr. Riddle begins the interview by talking about growing up in Oglethorpe, Georgia and how nobody had graduated from Tech from his home county. He states that he went to Tech because his father would pay for it. Mr. Riddle tells a good story about a letter he received from his father. Mr. Riddle then tells a story about how he determined his major during registration. Mr. Riddle talks about Dean Griffin and the talk he had with him about his grades and how Mr. Riddle's mother rewarded Dean Griffin for the results. Mr. Riddle talks about his social life and how football was important to Tech. Mr. Riddle talks about the Ramblin' Reck club and the problems they had with Auburn. He talks about Harry's Bar and the fights that broke out there. Mr. Riddle talks about the fraternity pranks that they would pull against the SAE house on Emory's campus. He speaks highly about the veterans that were on campus at that time. He states they made good role models. Mr. Riddle then talks his classes focusing on the production control professor nicknamed the Batman. This is a very interesting story that deals with the unusualness of Tech professors. Mr. Riddle then talks about the social life in Atlanta including the three groups of girls that they dated. They ranged from the Agnes Scott girls to the Buckhead Pinks. Mr. Riddle couldn't avoid military service during the Korean conflict, but he didn't do combat duty. He talks about his piloting days and how he went back to Oglethorpe to shoot quail after his discharge. Mr. Riddle then talks about his joining the First National Bank of Atlanta. Mr. Riddle ends the interview by talking about his father and stating that he was the first person to graduate Tech from his county.
