Scope and Contents

This is a living history interview with L.W. “Chip” Robert, IV, class of 1960, conducted by Marilyn Somers on October 23, 2001. The subject of the interview is Mr. Robert’s life and his experiences at Georgia Tech. Mr. Robert was born in Atlanta on February 18, 1937. His grandfather was a 1908 Tech graduate. L.W. Robert, Jr. was well known in politics and started Robert and Company. Mr. Robert’s father, also a Tech graduate, had a career with the Coca-Cola Company. Mr. Robert attended school in Atlanta, Chicago, and England before graduating and starting at Tech in 1955. He joined the Chi Phi fraternity and, at times, had too much fun. He graduated in 1960 with and Industrial Engineering degree and spent two years in the Navy. When he returned, he married and got his MBA at the University of Virginia in 1964. He worked Wall Street and returned to Atlanta to be the President of Robert and Company. The company was not doing well at this time, but his financial experience helped him save the business. Projects include the engineering work for Zoo Atlanta and several buildings in Washington, D.C. as joint ventures with other Tech alumni. More recently, Robert and Company’s work is primarily international. Mr. Robert and his wife, Susan, have two daughters.
