This collection of consoles, games, accessories, documentation, and televisions was assembled by the Georgia Tech Digital Media program (part of the School of Literature, Media, and Communication) to support the study of video games.
Most of the items in the collection have been tested to determine whether they function. If testing revealed the need for repairs or acquisition of missing equipment, this has generally been noted at the item level under the Conditions Governing Use note. Some material is housed in the retroTECH Lab, but much of it is in storage. Please contact the Georgia Tech Archives if you are interested in using materials from this collection in the retroTECH Lab. We will contact you about scheduling a visit.
The Atari 2600, originally sold as the Atari Video Computer System or Atari VCS is a home video game console from Atari, Inc. Released on September 11, 1977, it is credited with popularizing the use of microprocessor-based hardware and games contained on ROM cartridges, a format first used with the Fairchild Channel F in 1976. The Atari VCS launched with nine cartridges offering simple, low-resolution games in 2 KiB cartridges. The 2600 was bundled with two joystick controllers, a conjoined pair of paddle controllers, and a game cartridge: initially Combat, and later Pac-Man. It helped spawn a multi-billion dollar industry, paving the way for Intellivision, ColecoVision, Nintendo and the Sega Genesis. Atari 2600 sold an estimated 30 million units during its lifespan. It had an introductory price of $199.
The CX2600A model is almost identical to the previous VCS model. The major difference is this version has 4 switches on the front instead of 6. The other two have been moved to the back of the console.
The Atari 2600 Jr. is a smaller and less expensive version of previous models. The functionality is the same.
