Scope and Contents

The Research News and Publications Office Visual Materials consists of slides and photographs documenting research and innovation at Georgia Tech and organizations related to Georgia Tech. The images in this collection were taken to illustrate articles in one of RNPO's publications and possibly used for presentations as well. The slides are color images while the photographs are black and white. Although most of the items processed originally have titles or captions, there are both slides and photographs without identification or categories. Very few of the photographs are dated and none of the slides processed originally have dates. Although many of the addenda materials have approximate dates, many do not have titles or captions.

Administrative History of Research News and Publications Office

The Georgia Tech Research News and Publications Office (RNPO) offers media relations, publication services, and online support for research and service activities at Georgia Tech. The Research News and Publications Office produces Research Horizons Magazine, Impact Newsletter, and the Georgia Tech Research Institute Annual Report. RNPO has won many media relations awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

The Research News and Publications Office serves three major groups on campus: Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies, and the Vice Provost for Economic Development and Technology Ventures (EDTV). RNPO also reports information from other Georgia Tech entities such as Advanced Technology Development Center, Enterprise Innovation Institute, and VentureLab.

Arrangement

The materials in this collection are divided into two series: Slides and Photographs. Each series is further divided into sub-series. These sub-series are the original categories used by RNPO: acoustics, aerospace, agriculture, airborne labs, alternate energy, antennas, architecture, artificial intelligence, ATDC/High Tech, Atlanta, bioengineering and biosciences, biomedical, biotechnology and biology, buildings, ceramic engineering, chemical engineerings, chemistry, civil engineering, command and control, communications, computer science, computers, computers GTRI, defense electronics and communications, earth and atmospheric sciences, economic development, electrical engineering, electromagnetic effects, energy, environment, environmental safety and health, facilities, field offices, general, general GTRI, geophysical sciences, GTRI Labs, health, historic, industrial, industrial and systems engineering (ISyE), infrared and electro-optics, international, lasers, management, manufacturing, manufacturing technology, material sciences, materials GTRI, mechanical engineering, microelectronics, microelectronics academic, millimeter waves, minorities, nation, Olympics, personalities, physics, poultry, psychology, radar, Rehab Tech, robotics, social sciences, space, state, students, telecommunications, textiles, and transportation.

SERIES 1, Slides: RNPO assigned each category a slide tray or rack number and each slide an item number. The slides were organized in these categories and retain the original slide tray-item number. The categories are in alphabetical order; this order has no bearing on the slide tray numbers. There are a few categories without slides. There are also some slides without known categories even though they have an original number.

The slides processed originally and the slides processed as addenda are two separate groupings of slides. This is evident by the duplication of rack/tray numbers corresponding to different category headings and vice versa. To help eliminate confusion, a prefix was added--"A" is the prefix for the originally processed materials, "B" is the prefix for the addenda slides. Although many of the subject heading are repeated in the addenda materials, not all are, and there are some new headings as well.

SERIES 2, Photographs: The photos were not part of any original numbering system, therefore they were placed under a new numbering system. However, the arrangement of the photographs is based on the existing category system. Some photos are unidentified and/or the correct category was unclear.
