The Office of the Controller (sometimes known as the Office of the Comptroller) was formed at Georgia Tech at the end of World War II. The office handled most of the finances of the Institute. Prior to 1945, finances were managed by the Treasurer; Frank King Houston, who had served as Treasurer at Tech since 1919, became the first Controller. James R. Anthony succeeded Houston in about 1949 and served in the position for about twenty years. During the 1960s, the position of Controller was elevated to the level of Vice President. By the early 1970s, most of the Controller's duties were taken over by the Vice President of Business and Finance.
